Dusted The Garrison, Toronto ON, May 12
Published May 13, 2018Tech issues pushed back Dusted's already late start time, so it was a bold move for group mastermind (and Holy Fuck member) Brian Borcherdt to kick things off with "a chill vibe." But Borcherdt, who's grown the project from a two-piece to a five-member group that included his wife Anna Edwards and Fake Palms' Michael Le Riche on bass, knows what he's doing.
Opener "Seasons" was juxtaposed against a pair of comparably upbeat numbers, including "Backwoods Ritual," which sounded like middle-of-the-road indie rock in comparison to the more subtle material that was given added heft from the expanded lineup.
"All I Am" was a particular highlight, as the band slowly built the song to a searing climax. Though Borcherdt's performance was as confident as ever, he admitted that he was quite nervous. "This feels like the first Dusted show," he said. He stuck almost entirely to selections from the recently released Blackout Summer, but threw it back to debut Total Dust with final song "Property Lines" capping off a too-short set that left everyone wanting more.
