Published Oct 17, 2014Black Rebel Motorcycle Club member Leah Shapiro has some rather tough times ahead of her, as the drummer has announced that she's having brain surgery.
In a statement on Facebook, she revealed that she is suffering from something called Chiari malformations, which she explains as "structural defects in part of the brain and skull which control balance and other functions." This has given her "dizziness, insomnia, headaches, tingling/numbness in my hands, stiff neck & pain" in recent weeks.
Now that the doctors have caught it, there is a surgery that is "usually effective." Shapiro wrote, "As you can imagine, I'm hardly looking forward to having my skull cracked open and my brain operated on, but it's the only thing that's going to help me get better."
This means that she will need to take several months off of playing drums, and the band have cancelled their upcoming show at Pomona, CA's Moon Block Party on Saturday (October 18). And while Shapiro anticipates making a full recovery and returning to the band, we probably shouldn't expect to hear from them particularly soon.
We wish Shapiro the best with her surgery and recovery. Read the full statement over at Facebook.
