Alex Désert Will Replace Hank Azaria as the Voice of Carl Carlson on 'The Simpsons'
Published Sep 24, 2020This weekend, The Simpsons will return for its 32nd season, and with it will come some major changes, as the show moves away from hiring white actors to play non-white character. First up is the character Carl Carlson, who will have a new voice.
The Black character who works alongside Homer at the nuclear power plant will no longer be voiced by Hank Azaria, who has also stepped down from playing the character of Apu. Instead, the role has been taken over by Alex Désert, Variety reports.
Désert is a veteran TV actor who has appeared in everything from Beverly Hills, 90210 to Better Call Saul and Better Things. His work as a voice actor also included recent roles in the Spider-Man cartoon and the Adult Swim show Mr. Pickles.
The new voice of Carl will debut on Sunday night (September 27) with the episode "Undercover Burns." As of press time, it's not yet clear Désert will continue to voice Carl for all upcoming Simpsons episodes or for just this episode. It's also unclear who will provide the new voice for Apu Nahasapeemapetilon.
