Published Aug 12, 2012Maylee Todd is a little woman, but her onstage persona is larger than life. Even though her scheduled outdoor performance at ALL CAPS! had to move inside, she didn't let a little rain put a damper on things.
From the moment she went on in the Artscape Gibraltar Point centre, she captivated the crowd with the confidence of a diva and the soul of James Brown. Shouting, singing and dancing her way through a series of funky jams that ranged from jazzy pop to R&B and disco, she had everyone on their feet and moving.
For the set's centerpiece, "Hieroglyphics," she disappeared into the crowd and her voice rang out before she returned jumping up and down with exuberance. Afterwards, she invited the Toronto collective Choir! Choir! Choir! to join her for a cover of Hall & Oats's "I Can't Go for That," and this made the room seem so packed that it was hard to tell where the performers ended and the audience began.
Throughout the show, Todd's live band and choreographed dancers were excellent. It all culminated with a rendition of Sesame Street's "Pinball Number Count" song, which was both novel and nostalgic.
